A Mirror Made of Noise

A Mirror Made of Noise examines how masculinity is constructed, performed, and sustained through repetition and myth. Situated within the Western United States, the project draws on the legacy of Manifest Destiny to consider how ideals of conquest, endurance, and self-reliance have shaped enduring male archetypes—the cowboy, the soldier, the pioneer, the father. Through fragmented photographic performances, these figures are reimagined and unsettled, revealing the tensions between authority and vulnerability that underlie normative masculinity. The project presents identity as an act of continual rehearsal rather than a fixed truth, positioning the American frontier as a stage for myth and performance where identity is continually enacted, contested, and transformed.
